Domains Updated 19 August 2025

Transferring a domain to TekLan means we become your registrar. You manage everything - domain renewals, DNS, WHOIS - from your TekLan client area alongside your hosting.

Domain registered with us and hosted with us? DNS is managed automatically. Once the transfer is complete, there is nothing extra to configure if your hosting is already at TekLan.

Before You Start

  • The domain must have been registered for at least 60 days (ICANN policy).
  • The domain must not be within 30 days of expiry - renew it at your current registrar first if it is close to expiring.
  • You must have access to the administrative email address on the domain's WHOIS record, as you will receive an approval email there.

Step 1: Unlock the Domain at Your Current Registrar

Most registrars apply a transfer lock to prevent unauthorised moves. Log in to your current registrar's control panel and disable the registrar lock (sometimes called Transfer Lock or Domain Lock). The exact label varies by registrar.

Step 2: Get the Auth Code (EPP Code)

The auth code (also called an EPP code or transfer secret) proves you are the authorised owner. Request it from your current registrar - it is usually available instantly in the control panel or sent by email.

Note: .uk, .co.uk, and .org.uk domains use a different process through Nominet's IPS tag system - see below.

Step 3: Initiate the Transfer at TekLan

  1. Log in to the client area.
  2. Go to Domains → Transfer a Domain.
  3. Enter the domain name and your auth code.
  4. Add to basket and complete the order.

Step 4: Approve the Transfer

An approval email is sent to the registrant email address on the domain. Click the approval link in that email. Some registrars also send a notification asking you to confirm the release - approve it there too if prompted.

Most transfers complete within 5-7 days, though .uk transfers are typically much faster.

Transferring .uk / .co.uk / .org.uk Domains

UK domains managed by Nominet use an IPS tag system rather than auth codes. To transfer to TekLan:

  1. Log in to your current registrar and find the option to change the IPS tag.
  2. Set the IPS tag to MRCHRISSY (in capitals).
  3. Contact us to complete the transfer into your account.

The transfer is usually processed within a few hours once the IPS tag change is made.

What Happens to DNS During a Transfer

DNS records are not changed by the transfer itself - the domain continues to use whatever nameservers are set at the time of transfer. If your site was working before the transfer, it will continue to work during and after it. Once the transfer is complete, you can manage DNS from the TekLan client area.
